An area in downtown Auburn was blocked off as authorities responded to an officer-involved shooting on Monday.

Auburn Police Chief Jason Moen says police were responding to a report of a female being held against her will in one of the rooms at the Value Inn on Center Street around 10 a.m. By the time they forced their way into the room, the occupants had fled out the window.

Moen says Sgt. Steven Gosselin encountered 36-year-old Joseph Arbour in the parking lot. He says an armed confrontation ensued after a foot chase. Sgt. Gosselin fired three shots at the man. He rendered first aid until first responders arrived, but Arbour was pronounced dead at the scene.

Arbour’s last known address was Bucksport.

Sgt. Gosselin has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice for all shootings involving police.

Center Street was down to one lane in each direction into the afternoon.

Investigators with the Maine Attorney General’s Office are assisting in the case.
