The Internal Revenue Service is working to determine whether the $850 economic relief checks distributed in Maine last year are federally taxable.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Maine is one of nearly two dozen states that sent checks to residents last year to ease the strain caused by inflation, supply-chain issues and other economic hardships.

For taxpayers uncertain about the taxability of their state payments, the IRS recommends that they wait until additional guidance is available.

If you’ve already filed, the agency says that amending your returns is not recommended.

The agency said more information on that could be available as soon as this week.
