School board members in Jay voted Thursday night to keep a policy in place barring transgender athletes from girls’ sports.

The decision by the district to recognize only two genders comes as the Maine Human Rights Commission is suing the school district, claiming their policy violates the Maine Human Rights Act.

According to CBS 13 news, those on both sides of the issue spoke out at a fiery meeting Thursday night, with the board deciding to keep the policy in place.

The school board’s decision follows the Trump administration’s interpretation of federal Title IX law.

The district will seek legal advice and is in the process of hiring a new attorney as they fight the lawsuit.
