Judge rules that Portland hazard pay provision will take effect in January of 2022

PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) Portland’s voter-approved hazard pay provision won’t take effect until next January.

That’s according to a superior court justice who ruled Monday on a legal battle being waged by the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The provision requires all employers in the city to start paying time-and-a-half for workers during declared emergencies, such as the one in place now because of the pandemic.

According to the Portland Press Herald, that legal fight is likely to continue and appears to be on it’s way to the state supreme court.
