A group of 32 U.S. senators are pressing Postmaster General Louis DeJoy on mail delays.
On this weekend’s edition of Inside Maine on WGAN, Independent Senator Angus King, who’s among that group, spoke with Gary Peters of Michigan, who is chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
Peters says roughly 81% of first-class mail in Maine is arriving on time, when the standard is 96%.
On Wednesday, President Joe Biden nominated three postal experts to the governing board of the U.S. Postal Service. The move could alter the course of an agency grappling with delivery delays and rumored cuts under its embattled leader.
If confirmed by the Senate, the Board of Governors nominees would bring additional Democratic scrutiny on Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a major GOP donor whose tenure has been mired by slow service and politicization.
Democrats have been pressing Biden to nominate a slate of potential governors who could oust DeJoy. He was nominated for the position by President Donald Trump.
