Two members of Maine’s congressional delegation support the use of the 25th Amendment to try to remove President Donald Trump from office after his supporters breached the U.S. Capitol.

Sen. Angus King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, said Thursday that members of Trump’s cabinet should consider removing him under the amendment.

Rep. Chellie Pingree, a Democrat, also said Thursday that she supports invoking the 25th Amendment or impeaching the president.

Trump was accused of inciting his followers to bust into the Capitol complex to stop the certification of the Electoral College vote. They disrupted the proceeding but Democrat Joe Biden’s victory was certified hours later.

All four members of Maine’s congressional delegation criticized the assault on the Capitol, but only King and Pingree advocated for steps to remove Trump from office before Biden is inaugurated on Jan. 20.

The 25th Amendment was adopted to address situations where the president is unable to carry out the duties of the office.
