AUGUSTA, Maine (AP)   Maine lawmakers will return this month to deal with potential vetoes of recent child welfare and tax reform legislation.

Democratic House Speaker Sara Gideon’s spokeswoman said Wednesday that lawmakers are set to return Sept. 13.

The Senate could consider the governor’s latest batch of board and judicial nominees. The spokeswoman said ideally, lawmakers would also adjourn that day.

Most new laws passed this summer can only start taking effect 90 days after lawmakers adjourn.

Maine lawmakers on Aug. 30 approved several of Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s proposed reforms to the state child welfare system. Lawmakers rejected LePage’s proposal to make it a crime for mandatory reporters like teachers to fail to report suspected abuse.

Lawmakers also approved changes to Maine’s tax code in light of President Donald Trump’s tax reform.
