Maine lawmakers have upheld the governor’s veto of a referendum that would have asked voters if they favor the creation of a non-profit, consumer-owned electric utility.

Under the legislation, Pine Tree Power Co. would replace Central Maine Power and Versant Power.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the Maine House on Monday voted 68-65 on the veto, coming up short of a two-thirds margin needed to override it.

An organization in support of the overhaul called Our Power said Monday it would begin the process of getting the question on the ballot again in 2022.
