A bill being proposed by Maine lawmakers would offer student debt and mortgage relief to first responders.

According to CBS 13 news, the bill would apply to state residents who are local and county law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS workers, dispatchers and public health workers.

The money would go through the Finance Authority of Maine, or FAME, which would distribute student loan relief and come up with rules for eligibility. The agency would also provide no-interest home mortgages to those public safety workers for the time they’re serving.

The one-time funding allocation would set aside $5 million for student loan relief and $5 million for mortgages.

The proposal so far only has support from Democrats in the legislature.
