Paul LePage declared victory Wednesday afternoon in the race for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District.

The former governor outlined his priorities during a brief press conference in Bangor, saying, “If it helps Maine, I’m going to be all over it. If it hurts Maine, I’m going to be all against it and I will work with anyone and everyone that wants to put Maine first.”

The race still had not been called as of Wednesday afternoon, though LePage was projected to win.

LePage held a razor-thin lead over Democrat Matt Dunlap when the announcement was made.

In response to the victory speech, Dunlap’s campaign said the race was still too close to call.

Dunlap is the state auditor, who won a competitive primary to face LePage.

LePage ran unopposed and was the favorite in the more conservative 2nd District.

The two are vying to replace outgoing Democrat Jared Golden, who decided not to run for re-election.
