AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Maine Republican Gov. Paul LePage has sent a letter to 45,000 employers telling them to push for the repeal of a law that relaxes work-search requirements for workers who see temporary layoffs.

The Portland Press Herald reports LePage said in his letter sent this week that the new law will raise costs for businesses. He says it will also turn unemployment compensation into an “entitlement.”

LePage vetoed the original bill, but he was overridden by the Legislature in July.

Republican Sen. Amy Volk, who sponsored the law, says it is meant to help construction and logging companies that use temporary layoffs during the rainy season.

Volk says the previous requirements were time-consuming for employers, employees and the state Department of Labor.
