The Cumberland County Jail is back open to all arrests after a coronavirus outbreak shut the facility down for nearly three weeks.

Sheriff Kevin Joyce says Cumberland County Commissioners declared a State of Emergency when 13 employees and nine inmates tested positive. That declaration was rescinded on Friday morning.

During the closure, Joyce says they moved staff around to cover duties at the jail, with 67 staff vacancies at the time. They also relied on assistance from Two Bridges Jail in Wiscasset and the York County Jail to take inmates.

Two inmates at Cumberland County Jail are still in isolation after testing positive, but will be released next Tuesday. All corrections staff who tested positive have recovered and are now back at work.

Joyce said they’re still looking to fill 64 staff vacancies, but have many applicants who are in the hiring process.
