Low cost Avelo Airlines will start offering non-stop flights between Portland and Tweed-New Haven Airport in southern Connecticut.

Tweed-New Haven is located on Connecticut’s coast and is a gateway to 15 towns that make up Greater New Haven, which is part of the New York metro area.

The flights will be offered twice a week on Sundays and Thursdays starting on May 22. The aircraft used will be Boeing Next-Generation 737 jets.

One-way fares will start at $39.

A news release touts Tweed-New Haven Airport as adjacency to multiple major highways and commuter railways making visits to the New England and New York regions especially easy. The release calls the airport a “refreshingly smooth and simple alternative hometown airport experience that will make visiting Southern Connecticut faster, easier and more relaxing than ever.”

The release also notes that last year, New Haven joined major cities like Auckland, London and Istanbul to make the New York Times 2023 list of 52 “Places to Go””

In addition, the release was complimentary of Portland, saying, “We also look forward to making Portland’s artistic and outdoor adventure, and art, music, and culinary scene a fast and seamless journey for Connecticut travelers.”

Avelo Airlines is a Houston-based low-cost carrier, that specializes on “unserved routes to primarily underserved communities across the country. Most Avelo routes have at least one small, easy to use airport.”

Portland Jetport officials are happy with the upcoming service.

“We are excited to welcome Avelo Airlines to our Jetport lineup,” said PWM Airport Director Paul Bradbury. “This new service will provide easy access between New Haven and Portland making it very easy to connect with family and friends this coming summer.”
