Maine CDC reports 3rd monkeypox infection as cases mount nationwide

A third case of monkeypox was reported by Maine health officials on Thursday, the same day U.S. officials declared the outbreak a public health emergency.

The state’s first case in York County was reported on July 22. The second case was identified as an individual in Penobscot County on Monday, while the third case was reported out of Aroostook County.

It comes as the number of cases nationwide tops 6,600.

The Maine CDC is making doses of the vaccine available to close contacts. The state has enough doses to vaccinate 311 people.
