AUGUSTA, Maine (AP)   Maine’s health and human services head says he welcomes a review of the way the state handles child abuse complaints.

Maine Public reports that Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Ricker Hamilton says the public shouldn’t point fingers about the beating death of Marissa Kennedy until the investigation is complete.

Hamilton’s agency is conducting an internal review of their handling of reports that Kennedy had experienced abuse. Lawmakers on Friday will decide whether to conduct an independent legislative review.

He says the agency is already taking steps to address problems identified by the children’s welfare ombudsman. The ombudsman’s reports say the department’s process has too often failed to protect children.

Hamilton says training has always been an issue for the agency and hopes it can be improved.
