A former corrections official in Penobscot County has been charged with sexual assault and tobacco trafficking.

The Bangor Daily News reports 48-year-old Robert Ireland of Old Town was arrested last Friday.

The arrest followed an investigation into claims from an inmate that Ireland was bringing electronic smoking devices and other contraband into the jail. He’s also accused of having inappropriate contact with two female inmates.

The paper writes that Ireland, who was a probationary employee, was fired within 12 hours of the complaint being made.

He was brought to Piscataquis County Jail on Friday.
