Maine declines funding to search for and remove lead pipes

Maine is among a group of states that have declined money from the Biden administration to remove lead pipes.

According to the Associated Press, Washington, Oregon, Maine and Alaska declined all or most of their federal funds in the first of five years that the mix of grants and loans is available.

Experts said some communities are hesitant to take out loans to search for lead pipes, which is why they’ve declined the money.

The Biden administration aims to remove all 9.2 million lead pipes carrying water to homes in the nation. $15 billion was made available through the 2021 infrastructure law to help states remove and replace lead pipes.

Lead pipes can contaminate drinking water and impact brain development in children.

States that decline funds in the first year can still accept them during the remaining four years.
