Maine electricity customers to receive millions in class-action lawsuit settlement

Some Maine electricity customers could be eligible for a payout from a class-action lawsuit settlement.

According to CBS 13 news, the settlement that was approved Wednesday means Electricity Maine could have to pay out as much as $14 million.

The suit, filed four years ago, claimed the electricity supplier enrolled consumers and businesses with the promise of saving money. According to court documents, the company actually cost ratepayers at least $35 million through fraud and deception.

About 200,000 consumers were eligible for the payout, but only about 43,000 filed a valid claim.

Those customers will receive about $3 million, coming out to about $75 per customer.

Electricity Maine and it’s parent company also agreed to pay attorney fees and costs but have denied any wrongdoing.
