AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – The Maine labor department says teen workers can now take on more tasks that the state says are allowed under federal law.

The Maine Department of Labor announced the regulations Monday at a time when the state is facing low unemployment and a tight job market.

The new rules say that 14-and 15-year-olds who work at lunch counters and snack bars can now do some tasks that count as “cooking or baking.”

Previously, Maine prohibited workers younger than the age of 16 from such activities.

The rules also allow 16-year-olds to take on some work in soldering and welding. Such 16-year-olds could also work alone in businesses that primarily handle cash.

The department also released a rule preventing minors from working at any businesses related to marijuana.
