State officials say they’ve detected more cases of a mosquito-borne illness in birds and horses in Maine.

Officials said Tuesday they’ve confirmed new cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in several emu flocks and multiple horses across Piscataquis, Somerset and Waldo counties in the past few weeks.

A case of West Nile Virus was also confirmed in a horse from York County.

Owners of species that are susceptible to EEE, including emus, ostriches and pheasants, are being asked to take immediate precautions.

This is the first year Maine has reported EEE, West Nile and Jamestown Canyon Virus in mosquito pools in Maine in a single season.
