Maine health officials investigate salmonella outbreak linked to crabmeat

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention is looking into five cases of Salmonella linked to crab meat sold by a Deer Isle company.

The agency on Friday said the cases were linked to meat from Hardie’s Crabmeat. Four Maine residents and one New Hampshire resident were sickened, with two requiring hospitalization.

An investigation found the crabmeat was most likely contaminated during preparation and packaging.

Health officials are recommending that any packages of Hardie’s Crabmeat purchased between June 15th and August 15th be discarded, and that freezing does not destroy the bacteria that causes the illness.

They said there is no evidence that crabmeat currently being sold poses a risk if consumed.
