Maine House Rep. Laurel Libby’s speaking privileges restored after Wednesday vote

The Maine House voted Wednesday to restore the speaking privileges of Republican Rep. Laurel Libby.

Rep. Libby was censured after sharing photos of a minor transgender athlete on social media in February, leaving her unable to vote or speak on the House floor.

Her voting privileges were restored following a ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court in May.

In a statement, Libby said Wednesday’s 115-16 vote came after Democrats caved because they knew they were losing in court.

At the time of her censure, Democratic House Speaker Ryan Fecteau said Libby violated the House’s code of ethics when she shared the side-by-side photo showing an athlete first competing as a male then as a female.

Maine House colleagues said the student received hateful messages after the post was shared.
