AUGUSTA, Maine (WGAN) Lawmakers are hitting pause on a bill that would have Maine join a compact with other states and allocate electoral college votes to the winner of the national popular vote for president.

CBS 13 reports that the Maine House of Representatives, which is controlled by democrats, tabled the bill Tuesday.

It comes after the House and Senate both passed the plan earlier this month.

According to the Portland Press Herald, if it’s passed and signed by the governor, Maine would join 16 other states and Washington, D.C. in the national popular vote interstate compact.

It would only be activated if enough states join and pool their electoral votes to effectively choose the president.
