Maine is the second-best state to retire, according to a new Bankrate survey.
The company says, “Maine turned in a fine performance, with strong scores in a number of categories.”
It was the top state for people of a similar age, as Maine has the highest percentage of people age 65 or older (23 percent)
Maine was also second for neighborhood safety, which the survey attributes to the state’s lower rate of violent crime.
In addition, the state ranked third for health care and fourth for its arts, entertainment and recreation establishments.
The Bankrate analysis weighted each category for importance, with affordability and weather given the heaviest weight.
Maine was 17th for affordability, but was in the bottom 10 (41st) for weather. According to the survey, Maine has one of the lowest levels of sunlight exposure on average in the country.
Four of the top 10 state to retire are in New England. Along with Maine, New Hampshire tops the list, while Vermont comes in fourth and Rhode Island is seventh.
