A bill being considered in Augusta would fine drivers who leave kids under the age of 10 alone inside of a motor vehicle.

State Rep. Margaret Craven of Lewiston is sponsoring the bill, which would not allow a child under 10 to be left alone inside a vehicle under conditions that present a substantial health or safety risk to the child.

Violation of the law would be a traffic infraction, with fines starting at $50 and going up to $100 for a second offense and $250 for a third.

The bill was last being looked at by the legislature’s transportation committee.
