PORTLAND, Maine (AP) Two members of Maine’s congressional delegation acknowledge the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force was responsible for evil acts, but both worry about consequences of his killing on U.S. policy in the Middle East.

Iran vowed “harsh retaliation” for a U.S. airstrike near Baghdad’s airport that killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force.

Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree of Maine said Friday that the killing “moves us closer to a senseless war” without congressional consent.

Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine said “calm deliberation” of options and consequences is necessary to avoid a major new conflict in the Middle East.
