Maine lawmakers consider heftier fines for distracted driving

A proposed bill in the Maine Legislature would increase fines for using your cell phone or other electronic devices behind the wheel.

According to CBS 13 news, the bill is being sponsored by Democratic Rep. Stanley Zeigler of Montville.

The proposal would up the fine for using a handheld electronic device or mobile phone while behind the wheel from $50 to $500 for a first offense. For a second offense, the fine would be increased from $250 to $1,000. It would also add license revocation for a third or subsequent offense.

A public hearing on the bill is set to take place at the State House on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
