The legislature’s Transportation Committee has rejected a bill that would have increased fines for drivers who are caught using their cell phone or other devices while behind the wheel.
Using your phone while driving comes with a $50 fine for the first offense.
According to the Portland Press Herald, the bill sponsored by Democratic Representative Stanley Zeigler of Montville would have increased the initial fine from $50 to $500.
Supporters argued that the current fine isn’t working and drivers are ignoring Maine’s hands-free law, but the committee rejected the proposal.
Instead, it directed several state agencies to launch an educational campaign reminding drivers that handling a cellphone while behind the wheel is dangerous and illegal.
