Maine Man, 71, Charged, Hospitalized After Police Chase

Blue Hill, Maine (AP) Officials say an elderly Maine man is facing charges after he refused to stop for sheriff’s deputies and police until after a police officer disabled his vehicle by shooting at its tires.

The incident began around 8 a.m. Saturday when authorities began searching for a man believed to be experiencing a severe medical issue.

A few minutes later the vehicle was spotted on Route 1 in Northport. The car was stopped briefly police on a number of occasions, but the driver continued to flee. The chase ended after a Searsport police officer fired his weapon, disabling the vehicle.

The driver, 71-year-old James Thomas, of Camden, was taken to an area hospital for evaluation. He’s facing a variety of charges.

It’s unclear if Thomas has an attorney.
