Police took a Bath man into custody after he allegedly attacked a deputy and body-slammed a police K-9.

The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a vehicle on fire near 290 Main Street in Richmond early on Monday.

Police said the driver of the car was fighting with a witness who reported the fire to police.

Police said the suspect, 46-year-old Shane Sawler, tried to punch the deputy then grabbed the dog and body-slammed it into the pavement.

Sawler was taken into custody and faces several charges. He was treated for bite injuries and then taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.

The dog recovered and the deputy was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital.
