WINDHAM, Maine (AP) A Maine man who was incarcerated at a Windham prison has died about four months after an assault in his cell that hospitalized him with a traumatic brain injury.
The Maine Department of Corrections said Renaldo Jones, 30, died Tuesday. State officials have not released information about the cause or circumstances surrounding Jones’ death, The Portland Press Herald reported Tuesday.
The Jones family said that state investigators told them they believed that Jones was attacked by the person that shared his cell in January. He was a hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury at Maine Medical Center. Investigators did not file criminal charges against the person.
The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit is investigating the circumstances around Jones’ death, the newspaper said.
Shannon Moss, a state police spokesperson, said they cannot reveal details of an ongoing investigation “but we will release additional information as soon as it’s appropriate.”
Jones was serving time on charges of theft. The department website said his release was scheduled for January 2023.
