A man convicted for the sexual assault and killing of a young girl in Bowdoin in 1988 is appealing again.
Dennis Dechaine is serving a life sentence for the murder of 12-year-old Sarah Cherry, who was found dead in the woods after she was reported missing.
According to the Portland Press Herald, Dechaine’s lawyer says the latest appeal is based on allegations that the prosecutor in the case “unconstitutionally swayed the jury” by making references to God during the state’s closing statements.
Dechaine’s previous appeal was rejected last month by a judge who said new DNA evidence in the case wasn’t enough to warrant a new trial.
