A Patten man is suing Versant Power, claiming that the company cut down nearly a thousand Christmas trees on his property without permission.

According to the Bangor Daily News, Ervin Tower filed the suit claiming that Versant workers cut down 973 Christmas trees in September, with each tree valued at $22.

The manager of transmission development and vegetation management at Versant sent an email apologizing and offering to compensate Tower for his loss. Tower, who filed the suit after claiming the company did not follow through on compensating him, says he’s owed $36,000 in damages. According to the complaint, that figure could double or triple if a judge finds that Versant acted negligently or intentionally.

The communications director for Versant said the company will move to dismiss the complaint, which they said is without merit.
