Maine man suffers burns over 80% of body while burning trash

NEW SHARON, Maine (AP) Officials say an 85-year-old Maine man suffered burns over 80% of his body when he accidentally set himself on fire.

The fire marshal’s office says John Gill, of New Sharon, was burning trash in a barrel when he added gasoline, causing flames to erupt early Wednesday evening.

Gill was critically injured. He was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland by a LifeFlight helicopter.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Gill’s condition had been upgraded to serious as of Tuesday morning.
