Maine man who allegedly murdered his father with scissors dies in jail

Police have identified the man who died at the Cumberland County Jail last week.

According to the Bangor Daily News, 37-year-old Darren Laney Jr. of Big Lake Township was found unresponsive in his cell on Friday. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Laney was accused of stabbing his father to death with a pair of scissors in March of 2022 and was indicted on a murder charge two months later.

His cause of death is under investigation.
