Portland (WMTW) – October 2023 kicked off with the 2023 Maine Marathon and it was a great success, with over 4,000 runners participating and hundreds of spectators and volunteers cheering them on. The race raised money for four local charities: the Ecology School, the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, the YMCA camp of Maine, and Veggies to Table.

“The energy was high and positive before, during, and after this year’s Maine Marathon,” said race director Bob Dunfey. “This event is just one of those keystone events, marquee events that so much money is raised for the community.”

Since 1997, the Maine Marathon has raised over $6 million for local charities.

The race started and finished in Back Cove, and consisted of a full marathon, half marathon, and relay teams. The course wound through the city streets and along the coast, offering runners stunning views of the Casco Bay area.

“It’s just overwhelming excitement,” said volunteer Chris Byrne. “I love seeing all the runners come across the finish line, and I love knowing that we’re helping to raise money for such important causes.”

The Maine Marathon is a beloved event by runners and spectators alike. It’s a great way to see the city and support local charities.
