Maine Marine Patrol leads search for missing kayaker

The Maine Marine Patrol is searching for a missing kayaker after an overturned boat was found at the mouth of the Piscataqua River on Sunday afternoon.

The Portland Press Herald reports that searchers are looking for 52-year-old Dan Vardell Jr. of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The overturned boat was found around 2:40 p.m. Sunday near Wood Island by a recreational boater.

Vardell was last seen preparing to launch his kayak at Esther’s Marina in Portsmouth.

The search was expected to last until nightfall on Monday and will pick back up again on Tuesday if necessary.
