The state police academy is meeting today to decide whether to adopt proposed rules allowing wider disciplinary penalties on law enforcement officers.

The new standards would let the academy decertify or discipline officers for actions including harassment, falsifying communications, possessing illegal drugs or engaging in conduct harmful to public confidence in law enforcement.

Two major police unions, the Maine Association of Police and the Maine State Law Enforcement Association, say the new rules are too broad, vague and could be stifle future recruiting.

The Press Herald reports the Maine Criminal Justice board of trustees will address the union complaints today at a special meeting in Vassalboro.

The18-member board includes law enforcement officers, prosecutors, town managers and citizen representatives.

Officers currently can only be disciplined for criminal activity with a few exceptions.
