LEWISTON, Maine (AP) Maine U.S. Rep. Jared Golden is facing criticism over his recent votes against expanded background checks for gun buyers and in support of strengthening the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

The Sun Journal reports Golden’s votes prompted the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund to launch at least 135 advertisements against the first-term congressman.

The ads say Golden “failed us” and “sided with the gun lobby” in his vote.

Golden, who was one of two Democrats to oppose the bill, says access to firearms is a “necessary part of daily life” for his constituents.

His vote backing ICE also drew ire from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.

While not naming Golden specifically, she says she was upset a “small splinter group” forced other Democrats to vote for the provision.
