A Maine House Democrat announced he will resign after pleading not guilty to defrauding the state’s clean election program.

Rep. Clinton Collamore Sr. of Waldoboro is charged with 20 counts of aggravated forgery, 11 counts of unsworn falsification and one count of violating the Maine Clean Election Act.

Collamore made his plea during his arraignment Thursday in Lincoln County Superior Court. He then announced that he would be stepping down, according to the Portland Press Herald.

The paper writes that Collamore told reporters he would return the salary he collected since being sworn into office and reimburse the public campaign funding he received.

Collamore has not shown up at the State House in weeks.
