AUGUSTA, Maine (WGAN) Maine’s Secretary of State is appealing a ruling in the state’s superior court that would allow a GOP-backed referendum question challenging ranked choice voting in presidential elections.

Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap said his office invalidated petition signatures to get the question on the ballot, putting them below the threshold needed.

A judge ruled against that decision on Monday, clearing the way for the referendum to appear on the ballot. However, Dunlap announced his office was appealing that decision on Friday.

Dunlap says they are working on the layout of different ballot styles consistent with the superior court’s ruling. If the status of that ruling changes, he says staff will create a different ballot if time permits.
