Maine’s top election official will be testifying before Congress this week in support of a sweeping electoral reform package proposed by Democrats.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows will testify Thursday afternoon in support of H.R.1, which is aimed at reducing the role of money in politics and expanding voting access.

Among the measures the package would implement is same-day voter registration, allowing full voting rights for convicts and former convicts, “no-excuse” absentee voting, and the use of paper ballots to verify vote tallies.

“I’m thrilled to be testifying, because H.R. 1 is a watershed moment for our democracy,” she hold the newspaper. “Jan. 6 demonstrated the fragility of our democracy and also its strengths, and I think people across the state and nation are taking time to reflect on how we strengthen American democracy.”
