A candidate for the Maine House of Representatives is accusing the government of controlling the weather.

The Morning Sentinel reports Republican Wendy Lee MacDowell of Augusta believes the government is manufacturing weaponized weather in order to punish voters in conservative states and seize land for lithium mining.

MacDowell posted the statements on social media days after Hurricane Helene, reportedly spreading a common conspiracy theory that weather is controlled by a research program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

MacDowell has also posted that all FEMA aid is a loan that hurricane victims have to pay back, which FEMA says is false.
