SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) A Maine-based supermarket chain says it’s launching a new initiative to tackle hunger and food insecurity in children, starting with a $1 million donation.

Hannaford Supermarkets says it’s calling the project “Fuel Kids at School.” The company says it will work with hunger relief groups to establish 90 school food pantries in Maine and other states in the Northeast.

Hannaford says it expects the effort to take two years. Company president Mike Vail says the goal of the effort is for “access to food to be easy for kids.”

The company says the pantries will be located inside schools and will allow students to choose foods they can eat during and after the school day.
