Maine’s supplemental budget is advancing, and it includes a tax increase on millionaires and $300 relief payments to more than half a million lower income Mainers.

A committee passed the budget on party lines with the Democratic majority prevailing.

Republicans say the budget represents out of control spending with a tax that’ll drive wealthy people out of the state, while Democrats say the policy is helping Mainers and funding key programs.

Included in the supplemental budget is a 2% tax surcharge on income beyond $1 million for single filers and income beyond $1.5 million for heads of households and joint filers.

The House and Senate will now vote on the supplemental budget.

Gov. Janet Mills is likely poised to sign the budget into law if it includes the so-called “millionaire tax” and $300 relief checks.
