AUGUSTA, Maine (AP)   The Maine Supreme Court is being asked to weigh in on a system that would allow voters to rank their candidate choices in the June primaries, as the deadline for printing ballots draws near.

A lower-court judge on Wednesday allowed supporters and opponents to pose questions directly to the supreme court. It’s being asked to intervene because of constitutional issues raised about the system approved by Maine voters in 2016, which allows voters to rank candidates on the ballot in order of preference.

A candidate with a majority of votes wins. If there’s no majority, then the last-place candidate’s votes are reallocated to the remaining candidates.

It’s up to the court whether to answer the questions. But time is of the essence; the deadline for printing ballots is later this month.
