BANGOR, Maine (AP) Maine is set to receive nearly $70 million from the federal government for highway and transit projects around the state.

The biggest chunk of the funding is a $46 million allocation that will go to highways. The money will help with improvements to 320 miles of lesser-traveled roads in the state as well as 268 miles of high-priority roads and 43 bridge projects, Republican Sen. Susan Collins said.

The rest of the money will go to projects such as supporting rural and intercity transit operators and supporting connections to island communities, Collins said.

Collins said continued investments in Maine’s transportation network “are vital, particularly during the pandemic that has caused a decline in revenues.”
