PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ The U.S. attorney’s office in Maine says it helped collect more than $3.3 million in civil and criminal fines and fees in the last fiscal year.
Overall, the Justice Department collected just over $15 billion in civil and criminal actions in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30.
In Maine, officials say $2.8 million was collected in criminal actions and more than $577,000 in civil actions. Federal prosecutors working with partner agencies also collected $915,000 from forfeitures.
The law requires defendants to pay restitution to victims of certain federal crime. Criminal fines and felony assessments are paid to the Department of Justice’s Crime Victims’ Fund, which distributes the funds to state victim compensation and victim assistance programs.
