A 49-year-old Winslow woman will spend nine months in prison for embezzling more than $815,000 from two Maine businesses she worked for.

Prosecutors say Sarah Nale conducted a check wrting sceme, where she stole money from a realty trust and a professional services firm, where she was the bookkeeper and only employee.

Nale pleaded guilty in Federal Court back in August and will have to pay more than $816,000 in restitution.

Courts documents show she would write large checks to herself for money she was not owed, but prepared a checkbook ledger that made the checks appear to have been made to legitimate vendors or for her usual salary.

Nale pleaded guilty on August 5th. According to court records, her check writing scheme took place between March 2012 and September 2022

The FBI and the Waterville Police Department investigated the case.
