Mainer wins Oscar for work on Avatar: The Way of Water

A Gorham native won an Oscar Sunday night for his work on the movie Avatar: The Way of Water.

Eric Saindon was part of the four-man team that won an Oscar in the visual effects category.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the 53-year-old visual effects supervisor graduated from Gorham High School in 1988 and currently lives in New Zealand.

A second Mainer was nominated in three categories but came up short in all of them.

Todd Field lives in the midcoast area.

He was nominated for best director, best original screenplay and best picture for his work on the movie Tár.
